The Monsignor Lafferty Tuition Foundation was established in 2006 as a result of the Iowa Educational Opportunities Act. This bill allows non-public schools to sell tax credits to individual donors to assist their families. Donations are made during the calendar year to assist students in the upcoming school year. The Monsignor Lafferty Tuition Foundation raised over $1.3 million in 2007 and $692,000 in 2006.

A donor may designate his or her gift to a specific Catholic school. However, a donor may not designate an individual student for purposes of tuition assistance.

Gifts of any amount can be made at any time.

The designation of any gift will be limited to the definition of an eligible student as defined by the Code of Iowa and the criteria established by the Board of Directors of the Monsignor Lafferty Tuition Foundation. If designated funds are not used for the designated school because of the lack of demonstrated need, those funds will then be allocated throughout the diocese where need is greatest.

Of the amount to be raised to generate the 2008 tax credits, 80% of the funds will be allocated to benefit a designated school based on a per student distribution. The remaining 20% will be reserved for unrestricted gifts to be used in schools where there is the greatest need.

Local school designations will remain in place until December 1, 2009.

The Msgr. Lafferty Tuition Foundation will accept cash, credit card, and stock donations.
